Self Defence…part 2
On Wednesday, 21st October 2009, Attic Studios was proud to host our second self-defence class. This time all the proceeds went directly to the Bangkok Breast Cancer Support Group, a representative of which was present on the night.
Three male participants were present, to help with demonstrations aswell as stand in for the women to practice their moves on..
The class was once again led by Aaron Le Boutillier (our resident coffee consumer and couch potato) . Aaron specialises in energetic security courses with a heavy emphasis on participant interaction, Aaron has made a name for himself Internationally and continues to travel the world delivering security training to a diverse spectrum of Industries.
Overall the night was both fun and informative, and enjoyed by all. There is a review – here – you can read for further insight.
We will keep you posted on future defence classes.
Thank you to Aaron, The Bangkok Breast Cancer Support Group and all who took part.

First Friday!…just another excuse.

Clear your calendars because Attic is launching First Friday, a gathering of friends and interested parties on the first Friday of every month at our beloved studio.
The mission of First Fridays is to promote and support local artists by providing them with an outlet to showcase their work.
Besides exceptional company (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), there will be a wine tasting, finger foods and best of all, a chance to watch some artists at work. Witness the detailed and colourful works of Elsie Evans and Wee Booncher unfold right before your eyes. Also be among the first to set eyes on the culturally vibrant photos of Peter Hockley.
If wine doesn’t wet your whistle, please feel free to bring whatever you fancy to drink.
This is a great way to start your weekend, support your local artists, and enjoy your evening in a fun, relaxed and social atmosphere.
There is no charge, so all you need to bring is yourself and your friends!
Can’t wait to see you all on Attic Studios’ First Friday!
Date: Friday, 6th November 2009
Time: 7pm – 11pm
Place: Attic Studios, Sukhumvit Soi 31. (Look out for the pink elephant riding a motorbike)
New Studio Member…
A couple of weeks ago, Attic got a new studio member.
If you have ever passed us by or been unable to find us, I assure you it won’t happen again. Unless of course you are accustomed to ignoring the pink elephant. If it helps, ours is on a green motorbike…

School’s in…Elsie’s back!
Elsie is back. The kids are gone. Familiar faces are back in the studio along with a whole lot of new ones.
The Life-drawing class is overflowing today. An excellent class for both the experienced and the relative beginner. It’s held every Thursday from 10am - 1pm and is led by Australian artist Lisa Bergan. Lisa regularly changes the models (both male and female) so the class has a variety of ages, sizes, colours & shapes to hone their skills with. A great opportunity for anyone who is at all interested in drawing or painting portraits and the human form.
Beginning next week – Wed, 16th September – we will start up a mosaic class in the morning, 10am – 1pm, and continue every Wednesday. So if you’re interested, please let us know and we’ll pencil you in.
Also, just a reminder that the foundation Impressionist painting course begins on Monday, 21st September. If you are interested and haven’t already contacted us…please do. If we do not reach our minimum requirement, the course will be cancelled.
Jeez, I’m boring today. My mind is elsewhere. Trying my best here, alright!
We haven’t had any wild parties in the studio for ages. So if you’re driving/walking by after dark, keep your eyes peeled, because it’s going to boil over at some point and you might as well join in. You’ll stumble home at an unreasonable hour, possibly wake-up a tad confused and oddly ashamed of yourself. But you will have had a good time…Guaranteed.
The hoards have scattered and Elsie’s outta here…
The last couple of months has seen hoards of school kids and teeny boppers take over the studio during their summer holidays. It’s been fun but as schools begin to open for the new term, the hoards are diminishing…it’s more like a scattering now.
Elsie’s off to the U.K. this Sunday after having spent the last week moving to a new and hobbit-like house. She’ll be gone for a month! I know – I don’t know how I’m going to survive either. But classes will go on as usual. So, if you haven’t been in for a while, get your butts in here and paint.
The foundation course for Impasto painting will commence on 21st September. If you’re interested, contact us asap and we’ll sign you up. Warning: this course is not for the faint of heart. I’ve done it and there were days I wanted to throw things. If you are open and committed to learning something new, then this is a great experience. One of the past students said about the foundation course:
“Every day was a revelation. The painting demonstrations were invaluable and exciting, and Alan’s ability to address each participant’s strengths and weaknesses helped develop our confidence and skills…This course is perfectly pitched for the serious beginner, it’s my best use of money in years”"
Impressionist (Impasto) Painting
Foundation Course

Leader : Alan Scott-Moncrieff
Dates: 21st to 25th September. (Intermediate and Advanced courses will take place in October and November respectively.)
Location: Attic Studios, Sukhumvit Soi 31.
Time: 10am – 4pm with 30min for lunch (included). Each day will end with wine and summary/critique.
Cost: 20,000 Baht per student (5 days).
Minimum class size: 10 students
Each class will commence with a complete live-painting demonstration of that day’s subject matter. The painting demo will cover all processes from selecting a palette of colors, under-painting, composition, brush-techniques, highlights & accents, and tips on painting completion.
Monday: the Nude (from life, female model – provided)
Tuesday: the Still Life (flowers, fruit, luxurious cloths, fish & other market items, etc – items provided)
Wednesday: the Landscape including instruction on painting water (from photographs of various settings globally – photos provided)
Thursday: the Cityscape (from photographs of Bangkok – photos provided)
Friday: the Portrait (from live model – provided)
Materials can be purchased at cost through Attic Studios.
Homework: all students will be assigned homework projects that will demand 5 – 10 hours of their time per week. These assignments will include color/tonal studies, brush exercises, composition, perspective etc. Students can either do these at home or subscribe to a discounted membership for studio time at Attic Studios to complete their assignments. These homework assignments will prepare students for the Intermediate course in April. After completion of all three Seminars (Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced) each student should have a solid core of techniques and an understanding on how to proceed with their desired approach. Painting is similar to learning to write: we must first learn the alphabet, form the letters, then join them to make sentences…all this so we can forget this process as we express our feelings and creative concepts. Without a solid understanding of the tools and their potential, it is not possible to find direction or effectively express ourselves in paint. You will learn the secrets of the impasto technique applied by such impressionists at Sorolla, Seargent and Monet during the height of the Impressionist movement. This style will assist you to see in a new way, and give you a foundation that may be used in a variety of painting styles as you evolve as an artist and discover your own personal approach to your work. This Seminar promises to be a dynamic educational forum that will inspire and equip you to take your art to a higher level of professionalism.
Alan Scott-Moncrieff was born in Scotland, 1966, and gained his BA in Fine Arts at Edinburgh School of Art. His exhibitions include solo shows at the Royal Scottish Academy and in New York at the Bologna Land Gallery, Marcelle Fine Art, and Hammer Galleries. An experienced teacher, he has taught painting at the Guild Hall Museum of Art, Edinburgh, at the Casa de la Cultura, Morella, Mexico, and has also taught general art to street kids in Cambodia. Alan is currently living in Bangkok where he is working on a series of grisaille/Renaissance-style paintings.

Soroptimists visit the Attic

In May, Elsie went to speak to the Soroptimists International on “A passion for Art”. On a random Tuesday in July, the Soroptimists came over to the studio for dinner and drinks and to enjoy a little conversation, relaxation, and figure drawing (or figure spectating in some cases). It was a fun and relaxing night for all members of the group as well as Steve, our figure model, who couldn’t wait to get up in front of his audience. Elsie did a brief demonstration and then the ladies took over.
Afterwards, there was more conversation, a little more drink, and one particularly classic moment:

A 90 year old soroptimist member & the all but nude Steve.
Naked truth…
A couple of weeks ago, Guru magazine ran an article on clubs in bangkok and Attic Studios was featured as an “Art Club”. You may have read the article and if so we would like to correct a wee misprint. The article stated that we do not have nude models in for drawing/painting sessions here but the truth is…we do.
